The first series of pictures on this page were taken at the 1981 Transatlantic Drag Bike Race which was held at Long Marston or Shakespeare County Raceway as it came to be known many years later.
The featured rider is Bo O'Brochta and his Terminal Van Lines sponsored top fuel bike which had the number 1 plate on it that year.

Three shots of the mighty machine.  It might not look all that much now but it was quite something back then believe me.

Left and right - Bo saying a few words to the crowd.
Below - adjusting the front brake with his crew man.

One of the few cars to be invited to run at the Transatlantic Bike Race in 1981 was the beautifully prepared Blue Samurai funny car.
Owner and driver Ron Picardo looks very pensive as he sits in the car.

Three pictures of the Houndog fuel altered taken at the 1980 Santa Pod Fireworks meeting.  These pictures, and the three below, were scanned from a contact sheet so I apologise for their quality.

Sylvia Hauser burning out in her ex-Paul Rossi Dodge Challenger.

Left and right : I believe this car is Alan Ritmeisters' Orpheus top fuel dragster.

This is Gerry Andrews being towed down the fire up road at Santa Pod in the Stone's team's Hemi Hunter Pro Comp dragster.  This picture was taken at the 1980 World Series meeting.

The late Jim Read launching his Dennis Priddle-built rear engined Pro Comp dragster off the line at Santa Pod.

The late Marion James driving her Instigator dragster at the 1982 World Series meeting at Santa Pod.  This car was originally built by Ray Hoare who raced it in pro comp under the name of the Turbo Saxon.

Keiran Westman seemed in reflective mood when Peter snapped him as he sat in the Vampire jet-powered dragster.

And here is an even more exotic dragster - the late (and greatly missed) Slam'n Sammy Miller's Oxygen rocket-powered device pictured in 1981.
Once seen, never forgotten.

And now a couple of shots of Norm Wheeldon burning out in the Plan-X Pro Comp dragster.  This slingshot dragster was capable of six second runs and was competitive with all of the rear engined cars in the class.

Left : Peter Jones co-wrote 'Drive it - the Complete Book of British Drag Racing' with David Hardcastle who is seen guiding the Plan-X car back in its tyre tracks.
Right : Norm Wheeldon and Plan-X are almost back to the line.
All of the Plan-X pictures were taken at the World Series meeting at Santa Pod in 1982.

The final four pictures on this page were taken at Mantorp Park in 1982.
Little and large - Häkan Averstedt's I class street car up against the A class street Corvette of Jan Johansson.  My thanks yet again to long time correspondent Anders Olsson for identifying the Corvette driver.
Martin Hopp's beautiful 'Vette bodied Pro Comp funny car waits to run in the background.

Many thanks to Kurt Ljungkvist who has been in touch with information about this car.

It was owned and driven by Torbjörn Gustavsson and his brother Christer who later became a partner with Hans Knuters in Pro Stock.  Many years later he was crew chief for Mikael Malmgren's Pro Stock car.  Now he runs a multi-car team including his entire family. Junior dragster, Super Stock and a Pro Stock.  His two daughters, a grandson and a son-in-law are all drivers.

Linda Vaughn - the first lady of US drag racing - put in an appearance at Mantorp.

Anders Olsson to the rescue again, this '68 Hemi Cuda was owned and driven by Odd Björnland from Norway.
