Tony Little on the start line at Long Marston in his Jag powered Apollo II E class competition altered.  Apollo II was built by Mr Norm Race Cars, i.e. Norm Wheeldon, which explains the immaculate turn out.

The only thing Peter and I can come up with between us is that the bike is obviously Dutch.
Fortunately Jim Reynolds has come to the rescue - he thinks it is Cees Van Dongen's CBX1000-powered machine.

Not much of a shot of the Houndog 10 fuel funny car I hear you say.  But what is that other funny car doing at such a crazy angle on right of shot?

The date was 27 August 1979 and Peter's reactions were lightning quick to get these two pictures of Allan Herridge flipping his Gladiator funny car on to its roof in the final of funny car.  Owen Hayward still managed a 7.38 at 138mph for the win.  Fortunately Allan was unhurt and was back in competition two weeks later with, if my memory serves me right, a castor on the roof.

Dennis Priddle burning out in champagne at the inaugral meeting at Long Marston on 10 May 1980 in his Mr Six top fuel dragster.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis recently and he told me that this car was the best that he ever drove.  Not bad when you remember he was allowed to drive 'Big Daddy' Don Garlits' car at the 1977 Easter meeting and raised the terminal speed record to 230 mph in the process.

The brand new surface was not providing the best of traction so Dennis' three passes were very smokey the best of which was 7.18 seconds at 204 mph.

Peter's caption for this close up picture of Mr Six read "Dennis always was a craftsman and the finishing was impeccable".  Agreed.
In case you are in awe of my incredible memory for dates and times, I suppose I should confess that I cribbed them from Chris Dossett's excellent Trakbytes site.

I think this is Kent Persson's top Fuel Dragster nicely posed in front of one of the Santa Pod gents' toilets.
I am glad I am not the only person who did that!

On page one I told you that Peter Jones wrote a book on drag racing with David Hardcastle - well here are the front and back covers and a very good read it is too.

This is Peter's favourite funny car of all time and once again I find myself in complete agreement with him.  Raymond Beadle's Blue Max was a real beauty and it didn't go badly either.

Dave Collis' much modified Vauxhall Firenza in the pits at Santa Pod.

This is a great action shot of Ian Messenger on board the double Norton-powered Pegasus bike.  This machine was always absolutely immaculately prepared - you could eat your dinner off it.

Peter took this shot of the Norm Wheeldon and Tim Claxton Pro Comp Dragster from the stands in the final of the 1979 World Series meeting.

Norm Wheeldon beckons Tim Claxton forward to the line.

Amazingly Peter shot this picture of Percy Nilsson's roadster from the stands using a 400mm lens with a 2x converter - hand held!

An excellent shot of Pete Goddard hurling the Liquidator competition altered off the line.

Team boss Nobby Hills with Owen Hayward who is about to drive Houndog wearing its stunning Model T competition altered body.

Owen Hayward boiling the hides of the Houndog 10 fuel funny car.

Ron Picardo at the wheel of The Force fuel flopper.

Last but not least we have a superb burn out shot of Dave Stone driving the ex-Blue Max Mustang now re-named Stardust.
