PARANOIA 1

An early shot of Paranoia 1 in the pits at Santa Pod in mid-1975 with Alan, on the left and Brian looking very pleased with their 'toy' and with no idea of how much better things were going to get !!

Paranoia 1 in early 1975 at the Pod, driver unknown.  There was no sign writing on the car at this stage, it was all done with stick-on lettering.

A tonneau cover has been added to the bucket T but 'Norman' the skeleton is still in residence.

Brian sitting in Paranoia 1 in 1976 waiting for a run with the sun setting in the background.  Steve Williams took this photo and says "I'd just bought my first SLR, don't laugh a Zenith, and this was my first attempt at anything complex.  The shot has faded over time but I'm still pleased with how well it turned out."

Paranoia 1 at Santa Pod in 1976 at the end of its career now fitted with drag slicks.  Contrast the height of the car against the race official with pictures of the later cars to see how high this car really was.  At the end of the year the car was sold to Barry Giles who ran it as Tequila Sunrise.

PARANOIA 2

This is Paranoia 2 under construction in Smyth Engineering's workshop in the winter of 1977/78.  As you can see the engine, transmission and back axle have been mounted in the completed chassis but there is no front suspension mounted as yet, hence the front wheel just leaning against the chassis.
Smyth Engineering were one of the sponsors of the team, and Brian's employers, and Paranoia 3's chassis was also built after hours in their workshop.  Check out the seat, someone donated this very comfortable bucket seat that stayed in Paranoia 2 for it's entire life, no problems waiting for oil downs etc., Paranoia 3's seat was much more basic.  Although I had an SLR camera at the time there was no money for anything else, like a flash gun, hence the blur !!

Paranoia 2's completed chassis in primer before final paint.  This chassis was much simpler to construct than Paranoia 3's.  The above comments about flash gun also apply.

Paranoia 2 racing our great rival Brian Munday in his 'Optimist' car at the  Pod sometime in late 1977 or '78.

Left : Paranoia 2 in the pits at Santa Pod in early 1977, the chassis panels have now been anodised but the body is still in base coat.  Contrast the distance from the front axle to the engine block with the modified chassis below.
Right : Paranoia in the sun in the pits at the Pod with 'Norman' the skeleton still in residence.  The body has now been finished with stripes laid out by John Read of Uncle Bunt's Chop Shop fame, then sprayed by the team who also added the lettering.

Left : Paranoia 2 completed at the Pod.  Brian is doing some polishing while Alan (through the rollcage) is praying the sunshine lasts.  Steve Williams wields the oily rag at the front.
Right : Paranoia 2 in all its glory in the pits at Snetterton.

Left : modified Paranoia 2 probably at Blackbushe given the wide open spaces behind.  Note the new torsion bar front suspension, ex-Panic front wheels and how close they are now to the engine block compared with the photos above.
Right : another view of the modified Paranoia 2 also possibly at Blackbushe.  Steve Williams is in the background and, no, he's not wearing a hat!!  That hairstyle was bang up to date in the late 1970s.  Steve wishes he still had as much hair!!

Modified Paranoia 2 at the Pod.
The driver's visor is still up and the pistons are down in the carbs so presumably the car is backing up after a burn out.

Two shots of Paranoia 2 taken at the end of 1979 to give existing sponsors, and also to show new ones, hence all the trophies in the foreground.
The cutting in the background is on the M40 at Stokenchurch and is the same one which features in the opening credits of 'The Vicar of Dibley'.

PARANOIA 3

Left, right and below : three shots of Paranoia 3 in its debut year 1981.  Again, contrast the height of the car against the people in the shot with the pictures of the earlier Paranoia cars.

Paranoia 3 with the body up at Santa Pod with Alan's Volvo and the team's trailer in the background.
The three round white stickers down the front edge of the body were scrutineering stickers as used by the French.

Above : Paranoia in the pits at the famous Le Mans circuit with Jean Tidswell's Jean's T alongside.  This was probably 1981 or 1982.
Left : a close-up shot in the pits at Le Mans.
Right : after the final run at Le Mans, they used to get you to hitch up and tow back down the strip between the huge grandstands on either side packed with thousands of cheering people.
Does it get any better than that?
No it doesn't !!!

Paranoia in the pits at Paul Ricard circuit in the South of France in the early eighties.
Behind Paranoia are Jean Tidswell's "Jean's T" who we match raced in France on several occasions and Ronnie Picardo's "Blue Samurai" Pro Comp Funny car.

Two shots of the final, modified, Paranoia 3 with its new fuel injection system.  Note that the tube axle has also now gone.  The picture on the left was taken at the Pod, the one on the right was at Blackbushe.

These two shots were taken at the Bologna Motor Show in 1984 which Brian and Alan attended and also performed some demos.
