PRESENTS

The late Andy Barrack was known to many in the UK drag racing community as an historian and a regular contributor to this site, amongst other things.
What is not so widely appreciated was his considerable talent as an artist and cartoonist.  In 1972 the National Drag Racing Club launched a club magazine appropriately named 'National Drag Racer' which was initially published on a bi-monthly basis although it later became monthly.  The first copy sold for the princely sum of 15p.  The seventh issue was notable because on page 21 it featured the first of the full page 'Granny' cartoons.  Andy produced thirteen of these cartoons in total and all of them are available to view here with the kind permission of Andy's widow Janet.
These cartoons are over forty years old and are very much of their time.  What is truly remarkable about them is that the first one was produced by Andy when he was only fourteen years old!

Andy's cartoons were not solely devoted to Granny and her friend Big Sam and fortunately I am able to bring you a few further samples of his virtuosity.  Veteran photographer and Acceleration Archive contributor Peter Quinn has four original examples of Andy's work and he has very kindly made copies available for publication, click here to see them and another cartoon recently discovered at John Woolfe Racing.
