NSRA Hot Rod Drags, Shakespeare County Raceway, 16 September 2006

You will notice a marked change in the pictures taken at this meeting.  This is because Acceleration Archive contributor Jeremy Cookson, the Marketing & Promotions & Track Manager at Shakey, very kindly offered me a track-side photographer's pass (that should read 'picture taker's pass' in my case to be strictly accurate).
Needless to say I had an absolute whale of a time and I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures taken at this most charismatic of meetings.
My thanks also to Jeremy for providing much useful information on the cars on this page.

The NSRA meetings are all about their members having fun - it sure sounds like a plan to me.  Of course some of the NSRA members are not like other folk, they do outrageous things like stuffing small block Chevy engines in tiny Fiats which produces quite extraordinary results as you can see.  This is one of the Skinner brothers' wild Taz Racing Fiat 126s, I am not sure if this is Taz Budda or Taz Boss.

They also do very, very long burnouts as this sequence of one rolling burn out by Jimmy Hibberd in the Valley Gas Speed Shop Boston Brawler proves.  In the end the tyres were spinning so much the car was barely moving forwards at all.  Great stuff!
Jimmy's '33 Willis runs in the Gasser Circus.

And this is Daz Selwyn demonstrating his own rather extrovert driving style in his Gasser Circus Dodge.  No doubt he lavishes enormous amounts of care and attention on Pandemonium, but when he arrives at the track and gets behind the wheel, the red mist must come down, and then this happens.  GR-RRR indeed!

This lovely old Rover P5 3.5 Coupe has been owned by Winston Sewell since 1978 and was absolutely immaculate inside and out.
And I dare say it will be again once all the melted rubber round the rear arches has been removed . . .

Here is David James in his 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS which is equipped with a 470" big block and a 9" Ford/Strange Engineering back axle.
David runs high nines in this great old car.

Chris Manning is another Gasser Circus competitor and is seen here leaving hard in his 461 cubic inch mid-ten second '57 Chevy station wagon called Hooligan.

Lee Pike's and Jerry Denning's Honky Tonkin' 461 inch '57 Chevy Bel Air ran as fast as 9.2 seconds.  It also had this rather endearing habit of whizzing past me on two wheels.
These Gasser Circus boys certainly know how to have a good time.

This meeting was (fittingly) one of the rounds in the Nostalgia Fuel Altered Association's championship.  This is the nitro powered The Mob being driven by Jim Usher.  Unfortunately two con rods let go just out from the tree causing severe damage to the block.

Bob Glassup was running mid-7 second passes in the high 170mph zone with his immaculate 465" methanol-burning Xtreme Racing Topolino.

Tony Betts has had a very good season indeed.  He and his team have transformed the Harry the Spider car into this fabulous looking 6 second machine.  He also set a new personal best terminal speed of 191mph on the day after I took this picture of him launching hard.

Those crowd-pleasing Outlaw Anglias were present in some strength.  This is Cliff Griffin boiling the hides and nearly deafening the chap on the extreme left of shot.

Paul Wright in his Alco Pop ran a truly mighty 7.5 second pass on this run to take two tenths off his previous best.  But he managed to improve on this to a jaw-droppingly rapid 7.481/190.32 lap on Sunday.
Just how fast can this car go I wonder?

The Wild Bunch were also well represented at the Hot Rod Drags.
This is the Ramraider slingshot standing up on its slicks during the burnout and being driven on this occasion by Ray Ford.  Ramraider is powered by an alcohol burning injected 355 cubic inch small block Chevy and is completely scratch built and self financed by the Dog's Bollocks Drag Racing Team.  The car has run a best of 9.503 seconds at 142.36 mph.  The driving is alternated between Ray, Ed Yates, Andy Gosling and Sarah Howells.  My thanks to Claire and Chris Hartnell for helping me out with details of the car and team.

Martin Holgate's historic Jag-powered Paranoia altered has undergone a major update over the last year.  Herb Andrews (crouching) has been collaborating with Martin using experience gained in the US crewing on his friend's straight 6 altered.  You can read an account of one of Herb's visits on Eurodragster by clicking here.

Neil Ward just manages to lift the wheels on his 464 cubic inch Wild Bunch slingshot which he calls Andromeda.  Neil has run a best of 8.900/148.89 in the car which is the ex-She Devil Super Pro entry of Steph Milam.

There were a few cars which were new to me at this meeting.  The first up is this immaculate machine from Ian Hanson which is destined to run in Super Pro ET.

And continuing the distinctly transatlantic paint jobs was Paul Bambrick's superbly constructed American Pie 302" Chevy-powered rail.  There is an excellent article on the construction of this car on Andy Kirk's Drag, Rod & Classic Review website.

This is the ex-Andy Hazel Pure Hell Fuel Altered which is now in the hands of Dave Armstrong.

The Firestorm jet funny car was doing its level best to incinerate everything behind it and would undoubtedly have sent the Christmas tree flying if the fireman hadn't lent it some much-needed support.
