This is the ex-Cuss and Ashley Ratcatcher competition coupe re-named The Stinker and driven by Shellie Billington with a Rat engine installed. The pits are so crowded this is likely to have been taken at Santa Pod. The car in the background with chromed supercharged 354 inch Hemi is Peter Jones' Rattler. I am indebted to research by Andy Barrack for much of the information on the cars on this page. |

Olle Svensson tells me that he thinks the Breddäck & Lyxfälgar injected dragster was campaigned by Tony Dönges before he moved over to Pro Comp. Breddäck & Lyxfälgar translates as 'wide tyres and luxury wheels'. The picture was taken at the Pod. |
This is the Backmouse dragster driven by Roland Forsberg also at Santa Pod. It had a rather suggestive picture of a young lady's rear end painted on the front wing which good taste prevents me from including within these pages. Roland went on to be involved with Micke Kagered's team. My thanks to Olle Svensson for providing this information. |

Richard Jarman's Hepolite Hustler slingshot dragster being towed in the pits probably at Blackbushe. |
The Enforcer straight six Jaguar -powered slingshot dragster of Richard Dawson is pictured in the pits at Santa Pod Raceway. |
The prolific Rick Fielding has been building again! This dragster is longer than the car pictured on page 2 and the Daimler V8 powerplant has been replaced by a Triumph Dolomite lump. This is Santa Pod again. |
Steve Johnson lifts the front wheels of his 1760cc Lotus twin cam Motor Mouse at the Pod. |
Another Jaguar powered slingshot, this time called Boston Straggler and it was driven by David Burdett. Ian Jupp tells me that this picture was taken at Santa Pod. |
The magnificent Glacier Grenade rear engined dragster owned and driven by Russ Carpenter. This car was the last of a succession of cars produced by Russ and was a solid 7 second performer courtesy of its supercharged and injected nitro burning 2500cc Daimler V8 engine. This shot was taken at Santa Pod. |

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. This is the beautiful looking Beautiful Noise blown Daimler of Barry Miller which appeared in 1979 complete with body panels by none other than Dennis Priddle. The car is pictured at Blackbushe. |
More flattery! Ian Shanks' front engined car is pictured on page 2 and here is his rear engined device featuring, yes you guessed it, blown Daimler V8 power. The venue for this picture of the car was also Blackbushe. |
Even more flattery - now even John Whitmore is at it! His Drag'n'Fly cars have been pictured in both front and rear engined form in these pages powered by 4 cylinder British Leyland lumps. Here is the Daimler powered version which first appeared in 1980, I am not sure where this was taken. |
The Spirit junior dragster gets a little TLC from its driver Dave Miller between rounds, the venue appears to be Long Marston. |

There was incredible variety in the bikes and cars in the 1970s which seems to have been engineered out these days. Perhaps all those rear engined Daimlers shown above started the rot! JD 73 was Triumph-powered and was called Red Rooster, it was built by John Hennessy and Steve Jeal. John tells me that this picture would be circa 1975 as it was later fitted with a blower. John then cut the front off the car, lengthened it considerably and ran the car in 1983 with Chris Worsell as crew. The car was sold to Mark Forester at the end of 1983. |
The Sinclair & Little injected V8 powered car gets a push in the pits at Blackbushe. Those slicks look a bit iffy for a dragster. |
The Instigator streamlined rear engined car is pictured in the fire-up area in the pits at Santa Pod having its motor checked out. Driver Marion James is at the wheel. This car used to be the Turbo Saxon which Ray Hoare ran in pro-comp, click here to see a picture. |
This car is almost certainly another incarnation of Steve Johnson's Motor Mouse slingshot dragster. |
The Avanti dragster was featured on page 1 with its senior citizen owner John Rotherham (click here to see that picture). The name on the side now reads 'M Rotherham' and the car has gained a supercharger. This picture was taken at Long Marston aka Avon Park Raceway aka Shakespeare County Raceway where it can still be seen from time to time running in the Wild Bunch. |
This is a rather poorly exposed shot of the late Ray Feltell being towed in his Penetration dragster at Blackbushe (I think). I have included it because it is the only picture I have of him and the car. Ray was a drag racer of long standing having campaigned both single and double engined bikes before moving on to four wheels. Ray's son Ian has been in touch and says that the venue was Long Marston. |

Rod George and Brian Rees' 1430cc supercharged Ford-powered The Creeper was, as you can see, a superbly engineered and turned out car. It is seen here with Brian at the wheel in the pits at Blackbushe. Top Methanol dragster pilot Dave Wilson tells me that this is the first competition car that he ever drove - great oaks from little acorns grow! |
