Mike "Kerby" Kason's immaculate 5 window coupe Kerbdozer, with its similarly well presented tow car, in the pits at Santa Pod. Mike tells me that the chassis was from the Aardvark Top Fuel Altered (click here to see a picture). The car performed champagne burn outs on its debut and was attended by a crew dressed in waistcoats and bow ties. |
Mike sold Kerbdozer to Keith Potter who campaigned the car as The Devil in Senior Competition Altered. It is pictured here in the pits at Santa Pod - as you can see the tradition of immaculate presentation has been continued. |
The blown Chiltern Valley Charger altered being unloaded from its trailer at the Pod. I wonder if the Reliant Scimitar body once resided on the Hillbillies funny car? Click here for a picture and see what you think. |

Tim Claxton's Coyotee Model T-bodied Jaguar-powered car was an excellent example of a once very popular way to go drag racing at reasonable cost. This car was originally built by Norm Wheeldon and campaigned as The Wheel Thing, click here to see a picture. Coyotee later passed to Andrew Muir who re-named it Dart - click here to see a picture of that car. My thanks to Tim Claxton who provided the information on the history of this car. |
The Bilhuset-sponsored Model T Senior Competition Altered on the strip at Santa Pod. I am grateful to Anders Olsson for telling me the driver was Kjell Johansson brother of Krister Johansson the well known Pro Comp competitor. |

Invader is a name which goes way back in UK drag racing. It started life as a V8 powered Vauxhall Viva HB built by Colin Mullen who upgraded it to the Vauxhall Firenza body seen here. The car had passed to John Morton by the time I shot it in the pits with its body raised funny car style. |
Another of the beautiful Jag powered T's. Contrast this with the picture of Paranoia on page 1 (click here) and see how the team of Thomas & Loten had advanced. The car is basically complete except for the paint. It is seen here in the pits at Santa Pod. |
Paranoia in the pits at the Pod again. By
now the paintwork is complete and the car looks an absolute picture. If you are having
trouble reading the name on the side the plastic skeleton gives the game away.
It sometimes had a card round it's neck reading "Does my Pa annoy ya?" |
The supercharged Brute Force Senior Competition Altered on the strip at Santa Pod. What an excellent looking car this was. |
Model T altereds came in all shapes and sizes. This is The Animal which was powered by a 4934cc Chevrolet engine and is shown burning out at Santa Pod. The driver was Mick Saunders. Andy Barrack tells me that the car was built in the street using a body and chassis from Jeff Jago and a rear end supplied by Allan 'Bootsie' Herridge. |
As you can see All Shook Up was a '32 roadster styled car, it is seen on the line at Blackbushe. The car was campaigned by the Puttick family. |
As I say - Model T-bodied altereds came in all shapes and sizes. |
Possibly the fastest Ford 100E in the west - or anywhere else for that matter! Jason Smith's 7017cc Pontiac powered Fire Injun seen in the pits at the Pod. |
This chap could do with a fire engine. The Incredible Hulk on fire, minus its front wheels, grinds to a halt while the Santa Pod start line crew race to the rescue. Stu Bradbury is in the natty threads in the foreground. I am sorry the picture is a little blurred - I must have been a bit excited at the time! |
All's well that ends well. Driver Robert Hughes emerges unscathed to inspect the damage to his pride and joy. This incident took place at the July 1977 International meeting at which 'Big Daddy' Don Garlitts made a return visit to the UK to avenge the defeat he suffered in Top Fuel Dragster at the hands of Clive Skilton. |
Not all competition altereds were sharp looking Model T's. The Stripper had a well hacked about Mini body and a Jaguar lump. It might not look that much but I bet the driver enjoyed his racing. |
The
Savage, a V8 powered Bantam bodied altered, is seen at speed at the top end at
Snetterton. My thanks to Dave Watling for writing in to tell me that the car
was owned and driven by his friend Keith McKee, power was provided by a 440 inch
Chrysler. |
Also at Snetterton but this time in the pits. Chris Pretty's eponymous Pretty Thing was yet another superbly turned out Jag powered T. |
Norm Wheeldon's The Wheel Thing originally appeared as a Jaguar-powered T. It has undergone a metamorphosis to become an injected V8 Senior Competition Altered and is looking absolutely cracking. |
Take a Ford Pop body, modify it somewhat, bung in a Jaguar lump and you have got Aggrovation. Andrew Gibb has been in touch to say that the car was built and raced by Bill Felstead, Rob Carrington and himself. |
