David Riswick is the head honcho at John Woolfe Racing
and was a pivotal figure in UK drag racing for many years.

The pictures on this page were discovered in the back rooms of
JWR's Bedford office and Dave has kindly made them available to

Baretta Funny Car

This Chevrolet Baretta funny car was purchased from Lil' John Lombardo who had blown the body off it whilst testing a new fuel system.  As a result, and very happily, it fell into the clutches of Dave Riswick and John Woolfe Racing.  It is seen here burning out at Avon Park Raceway aka Long Marston and Shakespeare County Raceway.

A new paint job but still piloted by Norm Wilding and still polluting the Warwickshire countryside around Avon Park.
My apologies for the feint vertical line just at the front of the headers.  The original picture was A3 size and had to be scanned in two halves and then grafted back together.

Steve Green's V8 Cortina

During the 1990s John Woolfe Racing sponsored a Rover V8 street altered class and nailed their colours firmly to the mast of this Mark I Ford Cortina driven by Steve Green.  This was the killer car in the class and nearly always brought home the bacon.

You can see the colours a bit better in this shot!
Fitted with a 4.5 litre Rover V8 and lots of JWR goodies the car was capable of mid 9 second passes at over 140 mph.

Steve Green leaving the line at Santa Pod in his characteristic wheels-up fashion.
Unfortunately the car was totalled in an horrific accident at the 1994 Easter meeting at Santa Pod.  The car was timed at over 124 mph upside down and going backwards through the lights!  Fortunately, Steve was unhurt in the accident.

Construction of an all new car  was therefore put in hand starting with a Pro Stock style chassis built by Jon Webster of (then) JMW Performance Construction.

In this picture the fibreglass body panels have been fitted showing the chopped roof, raked back windscreen, side skirts and a new nose job.

The body has had a blow over and this profile shot emphasises just how low and mean the car looked.
In this form the car ran a best of 8.33 seconds at 163 mph in 1997.

Other Pictures

There are lots more pictures yet to come of the different cars sponsored by John Woolfe Racing over the years in addition to those already on the site.  But the JWR collection contains many pictures of other cars and I thought I would bring you some of them now.
You will need to click on the picture opposite to fully appreciate that it is a way-out cartoon of JWR employee Melvyn Wooding's Blue Rose Ford Falcon.  It was drawn by fellow JWR employee Peter Simmons who worked on 'Woody's' cars with him for many years.  In addition Peter was a fire marshal at Santa Pod for a year and his wife Debbie worked in the Control Tower.  Peter now lives in the USA and works in the aeronautical industry.

Roland Pratt and the Hillbillies team are great names in the history of UK drag racing.  This is their Fiat Topolino bodied altered burning out at Santa Pod Raceway.  Team member Mike Derry is standing on the extreme right of shot.
Judging by the way the start line marshal is holding his ears, I think we can assume the car was LOUD!

Kevin Pilling driving his Pure Seven altered has done a leaving job on the Hillbillies car in the background.  This picture was taken at Blackbushe.

Swede Gunne Back used to campaign an impressive Corvette called Frighten Chicken before moving up to this Camaro which he called More Frighten.  This picture appears to have been taken at Silverstone.

The Stone family of father Dennis and son Dave are legendary names to all us old gadgers. This is where that legend began with their Opus One competition altered.  This looks like Big Daddy Dennis Stone driving (and losing!) in this race against Hush Bloo at Blackbushe.

Caution!  Do not play poker with this man!
An incredibly serious looking Dave Riswick at the wheel of the ex-Arnold Burton Gordon Keeble at Blackbushe in 1971.  Dave ran a 14 at 107 mph but, despite the fact that his car was fitted with a Formula 5000 racing engine, lost to David Rinder's Ginetta.

Gary Goggin in his pro stock Camaro looks to be well beaten in this race with Kevin Pilling's Satan's Toy at Santa Pod Raceway.

Thom Marshall, manager of the JWR shop at Staples Corner in London in his 340 Barracuda.  This picture was taken at an NDRC meeting at North Luffenham in 1971.

Full marks to Peter Quinn for getting this incredible shot of Houndog 7 with all four wheels well and truly off the ground in this heart-stopping moment for driver Owen Hayward.  I should think there was quite a bit of work to do on the car after this!
The bonnet of the car in the right foreground belonged to Dennis Priddle who, unsurprisingly, pedalled while on this was going on before nipping past for the win.

Shootin' Ed Shaver driving the Mark Stratton built rear engined Castrol-sponsored Vauxhall-bodied funny car in his quiet and unassuming way.

And after all that excitement what could be nicer than to relax and catch up on the latest news from the strips.

Tony Nancy either prising himself out of or lowering himself into his beautiful rear engined Top Fuel Dragster.
